This blog will try to capture some of my thoughts, impressions and ideas as I travel through EDUC5173 - Assistive Technology. In addition, I hope to be able to provide useful information to classmates from researching the internet and opening up the world of what is referred to as AT.
Some videos to generate thoughts...also gave me pause to think of where the future is with AT!

Today in class we were given the opportunity to work in a large group setting on a case study. I found this a great activity as it allowed me to connect with members of my class, discuss ideas and learn from one another's experiences and perspectives. As well, it also assisted in developing a common framework for completing our portion of the case study assignment.
My smaller group worked very well together and had some great discussions on what is communication, what messages do we want the person to be able to convey, in what setting, for what purpose and does it need to be a quick conversation. We also made sure that when we were working on developing our statements for the Selection Sets we were going to use, that we included statements that were reflective of the personality of the individual. In this case, that was a dog and also the fact that the person is very social - so these factors were considered.
The majority of the class was spent on our work planning for this assignment and I spent a bit of time tonight going over our plans and writing them up to submit tomorrow. However, the collaboration of the group to work on a project like this is invaluable because you get many different perspectives and things you may not have considered coming up in conversations. So, your project becomes even better! It was an exciting class.
We also spent the beginning portion of the class with Barb demonstrating for us how to use the iPod Touch to make selection sets, adjust settings, include messages and adjust levels of speech, brightness, etc. This is such a wonderful tool to use. My group also discussed all these factors to consider as well. I know that I am looking forward to getting to class tomorrow to work on the iPod Touch and planning for our student!
